After earning his computer animation degree from Villa Maria College, Kevin Santiago wasn’t sure what career path to take. A visit to Villa’s career placement office introduced him to AmeriCorps, a national service program that provides a living stipend, student loan support, and hands-on experience. AmeriCorps offered an opportunity to continue to build learning and experience while gaining hands-on experience that would help Kevin better envision his future. Through AmeriCorps, Kevin joined Mission: Ignite, a nonprofit working to close the digital divide in Western New York by expanding access to technology, computers, and training.
At Mission: Ignite, AmeriCorps members play a vital role as instructors and in working with individuals to improve digital literacy skills while gaining valuable hands-on experience. Kevin began as a digital skills trainer, creating class materials with his animation background before he began to lead his own classes. He continues to teach in Mission: Ignite’s Tech360 program helping people to strengthen computer skills for work, school, and everyday life. He now serves as a Senior Digital Skills Trainer, working with individuals to solve specific tech challenges and as a Lab Equipment Manager
“Helping other people really feels good,” Kevin says. “I get to use my technical skills to teach, which is always interesting since everyone starts at a different level. My job is to figure out where they need help and how we can work together to improve their skills.”
Kevin also notes that AmeriCorps is a win-win-win. “I gain experience and help to pay my loans, my work helps Mission: Ignite offer their services, and ultimately those we serve gain tech skills to use in ways that make their lives better.”
Kevin will finish his fourth AmeriCorps service term this fall. While still exploring his next step, he credits the program with sharpening his skills, boosting his confidence, and clarifying the kind of career he wants to pursue.
